Memory Lane: Paying Attention

June 19, 2017 by Louise LeBrun Leave a Comment

Being human, there are two things essential for our ability to function in this physical world. The first, is a body. Without that, we are incapable of detecting, sensing and metabolizing the experience of matter. Our bodies are capable of far more than we are taught, making it possible for us to ‘ingest’ and ‘digest’ ‘life’ at many different levels – from the banana you have for breakfast to the vast and complex network of thoughts, beliefs, values, attitudes, intentions, hopes, dreams, visions, etc.  that shape the process of how you choose and define the content/what of the choices  you make.

The second, is breath.  Breathing ensures that we get to experience the next moments in our life.  When breathing stops, so do we.

Rather than seek perfection, relaxing into what is already presenting makes way for new insights.  Paying attention, rather than running on habituation and memory, can and will change your life.

The following closing thoughts can be found at the end of:
Episode 1 of ‘Reclaiming Your Self: Women Unedited and Engaged!’ on the topic of ‘Women Waking Up!’

===========================

I’d like to share with you a few simple things that you can keep in mind as you’re going through your day.

The first one is that whole notion of: Breathe. Not breathing for technique but allowing yourself to begin to notice: how often do you hold your breath through your day? What’s going on around you when you stop breathing? When you do, just allow yourself to notice… and take a breath. Nothing to beat yourself up about – just useful to pay attention to.

Next : Follow the impulse. When something moves in your body, and you have what you call a sensation or an emotion, don’t shut it down. Let your attention go directly to where that is in your body  and actually allow that impulse in the body to expand…. and as you do, relax your body; keep your breathing nice and deep; and let it be in flow. As a result of that, you’re going to discover something. And when you do, let yourself know the truth of your experience. You and I are very adept at telling stories about everybody else’s experiences but often forget the only experience that really matters in the truth of your world, is your own.

Next: Stay in the tough conversations. The toughest conversation you’re ever going to have is the one you have with yourself. Unless and until you change that one, nothing in your life can change.

Next: Be willing to stand alone. How tough is that! We are well trained and rewarded for our willingness and ability to be like everyone else; to fit in; to not make waves. The thought of standing alone often leaves us feeling unsure – even afraid! – and yet, we need to explore those moments when push comes to shove and we know:  to honour yourself, you need to stand separate and apart without anyone else being there with you. How willing and able are you to do that?

And finally: Shape or be shaped by your world. There is nothing in the middle. Ask yourself: “If I’m not living the life that I’m designing by my own choosing, then whose life am I living?”
