My father, Thomas Arthur Lane, was one such victim. He was being treated under Dr. Ewan Cameron at the Allen Memorial Hospital for depression around the late 50’s and early 60’s. I have not done much about this situation but I think that at 87 years of age it’s time I did. I have first to determine if he was actually a victim or an observer. I do know that he returned home periodically saying that he didn’t want to go back as they did awful things in that hospital. My aunt (his sister) insisted that he do so as Dr. Cameron was a wonderful doctor??
Perhaps the greatest harm done to any of us is that of teaching us to defer to ‘authority’; to surrender the truth of our own experience to some external ‘expert’ who knows better. I am saddened to hear that this misery has touched your family directly. And the truth is: such invasions of mind are pervasive and unending. Our greatest resource is discovering how to trust ourSelves.
Should you choose to pursue, I’m sure you will find others who have chosen to do the same. Perhaps a first step is to acknowledge to your father than his experience has been validated.
